Lean On Me

Friday I decided against my better judgement to ride to school through a snowstorm on my bicycle, got wet, got a nasty chill and have thus spent the weekend in my pajamas and not doing anything interesting at all, except snotting a lot and feeling rather bleaghh (I think Charles M. Schulz may have invented that word). Anway, as I have nothing interesting to say, here’s Club Nouveau covering Bill Withers back in 1987. 20 years ago. Who would have thunk it?

Yes

I know Rik likes this but I can’t decide if it is really quite good, or just mildly annoying.

Lanky Northern Gits

Got a mail from friend-of-ages Mike Potter the other day reading:

Hiya lad, thought you might enjoy reading this article that appeared in the Guardian at the weekend. Talks of Middlesbrough as ‘crisp packet town’. About right isnt it.

Cya, Potter

Which was interesting, so I thought I’d do a google and find some other stuff on it and came up with this - which surprised the Christ out of me, because the fella who wrote it, Alfred Hickling, was in the year above me in University, and judging by his picture, he hasn’t changed much over the last 15 years at all. Small world.

Well, I suppose going to an “elite” university does make it a wee bit smaller, eh?

Here’s one last circular from that other lanky northerner Jonathan Bond:

Until recently, the State only fingerprinted criminals. As
parents at a primary school in Cambridge, we were horrified
to learn that all this is changing.

(read what the BBC said:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/2144188.stm )

In 3,500 primary schools across the UK, impressionable
children aged from 5 to 11 are being fingerprinted. 3/4 of
a million have already been processed, and 20 schools a
week are joining the scheme. If you’re a parent, your
school could be next. But even if you’re not, is this
really the kind of society we want to live in?

The whole process may be illegal. We haven’t found a single
parent who was ever asked for their permission. Many were
not even informed until afterwards. Some parents only found
out when they asked their children “what did you do at
school today?”
