Ah. Hello! You know I was wondering if you might find this and comment on it - but wow! That was quick! Thanks for not taking umbrage with my pickiness. Of course you are right that "horror" is subjective, and it is quite possible that my own senses have been dulled over the years by watching too many gory movies... Still as I say I did enjoy the book and do recommend it regardless. Thank you for commenting and for the background information on YBFH - I look forward to its future incarnation!

Thanks for your comments about Best Horror of the Year, volume One.

I've always found that "horror" is very much in the eye of the beholder, because I found all the stories I chose disquieting, conveying a sense of deep unease and yes, dread. And even more so--in your own words "Forboding." If they hadn't struck me that way, I certainly wouldn't have included them in the book.

As for why the YBFH went away, it was by mutual agreement among the editors--Kelly, Gavin, and myself (and our packager, Jim Frenkel) and our editor at St Martin's. We weren't happy with our treatment there and they were no longer interested in pushing the book to the degree necessary to keep them happy.

Hopefully, some day a new YBFH will arise--with me still editing the horror but with a different fantasy editor.

That's pretty good, indeed. Her drawing is also excellent. The only thing I don't get (besides the ultimate meaning of the dream, if there is one) is the bone-box thing above middle-Mickey.

I've got to ask what kind of teacher you are that students at this level know the word "predatory"....? :-)

Is it special sauce? Perhaps a visit to G-Love is in order, for pizza and beer of the highest order. Amen.

That sounds awesome Jeffrey. I'm generally impressed by Japanese fireworks displays. I really enjoyed the Uji fireworks last year (even though the crowds were horrible) so this years PL fireworks were a huge dissappointment. However, a week later Mewby and I went to see the Yodogawa fireworks and they were so ridiculously fantastic that we both agreed they were quite possibly the best we had seen EVER IN OUR LIVES. Definitely going back next year!

As an American who's seen some pretty amazing fireworks displays (the USA does it up right on 7/4, you kno), I have to admit that the most amazing fireworks display I've ever seen, by far, was the Obon display in Matsushima, near Sendai. I saw it perhaps 15 years ago, and after 45 minutes of awe-inspiring display, it built to a crescendo like I'd never seen before.

Then it started up again, and built to an even BIGGER crescendo. This happened several times, leaving everyone mentally exhausted (in the best possible way) after an hour and a half total.

I kept a diary at the time, and had started writing in it moments after I thought it had ended after the first 45 minutes, and kept following up with "it started again!" or something like that. I should look it up.

I've been wanting to see it again ever since.

My own favorite moments (so far) were:

The guy with his mask pulled down to his chin and a ciggie in his mouth.

The masked Kamogawa jogger. (Nearly crashed my bike with laughter)
